Consumer Agency Tightens Scrutiny of Baby Sleep Products

Image
By ANDREW MARTINJAN. 31, 2011Three years ago, Dr. Bradley Thach, a professor of pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis, published findings that had the potential to upend nurseries across the nation, and perhaps save some lives too.In reviewing data from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Dr. Thach concluded that crib bumpers — the padding wrapped around the inside of a crib that often matches the bedding—were killing babies. In a 10-year period beginning in 1995, he found 27 suffocation deaths involving bumper pads, and he theorized phone that many more might have occurred because of inconsistencies in the data."Because bumpers can cause death, we conclude that they should not be used," he warned. The Consumer Products Safety Commission initially ignored the findings. Last summer, it reached the same conclusion as a trade group representing product manufacturers, which asserted that other factors, like a crib crowded with pillows or babies sleeping ...

Shooting in the dark?

Image
Bang bang he shot me down,Bang bang I hit the ground,Bang bang that awful sound,Bang bang my baby shot me down…"I know I have been shot. It's pitch dark, except for a flurry of lights whizzing past. There's another gun trained on me. I grip mine tighter, position my finger on the trigger and just when I feel life seeping back it's my turn to shoot — this time, at my best friend. Ten minutes later the lights come on, we high five and walk out grinning from my first-ever game of laser tag.So, what's that, you ask? It's the game Barney made popular in the series How I Met Your Mother and involves teams manufacture of players shooting each other with radio frequency and infra-red emitting guns. "Phaser, not gun," corrects an amused 14-year-old who can't seem to get over the vast difference in our totals. The opposing team scored 52,750, and my team…well, lets not even go there. 15,000 points too short, and my individual score, a paltry 4,125. (But ...

Battery Operated Drip System

Image
My aim was to create a battery operated drip system, that could easily be installed anywhere in the garden.Once a day, for a preset number of minutes, the unit waters the plants via a little 9V operated pump that is submersed in a 20 Liter bucket.See the picture of the end result above: the unit is screwed onto a little wooden plate, and connected to the garden fence. The bucket is situated next to it, and two little wires lead towards the submersed pump. The pump will then supply the water to a tiny hose with some dripper heads.Extremely low power consumptionI found a link gasket to a site that describes how to use the Atmel chip that is present in an Arduino Uno in a standalone fashion, with a library that allows for extremely low power consumption. This helped realise a design that is extremely low in power consumption. The batteries will last for a few years.RequirementsSetting the number of minutesThe yellow led on the left flashes will flash after every 15 seconds. Then it wil...

Bare Minerals Causing Cystic Acne?

Image
My Story of Acne Through My Life I got complimented on my skin today. It completely took me by surpise because I have never been complimented on my skin. I have been complimented on my eyes, ambition, and style. But, never my skin. Since I was in 7th grade, I have been plagued with those bumps on my face. They take on many forms and go by many names including pimples, zits, boils, spots, breakout, cysts, and my least favorite: acne vulgaris (the name just sounds horrible!). I have been through many dermatologists, each one striking both my ego and my wallet. It was humiliating sitting in front of each one as they crinkled up their nose studying the one thing I spent 30 minutes that morning scrubber trying to hide. They would prescribe it all: antibiotics, face creams, gels, Accutane, and soaps. I dreaded my follow up appointments even worse than my initial appointments. I knew they would be disappointed in my progress and make a snide remark doubting I was following their regim...

Testimony in Amanda Knox Trial Disputes Bloody Footprints

Image
Testimony in Amanda Knox's murder trial to day challenged prosecution arguments that bloody footprints at the crime scene belonged to Knox's co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.Knox and Sollecito claim they are innocent of the crime and that they were together in Sollecito's apartment on the night that Knox's English roommate, Meredith Kercher, was killed. The prosecution's argument that the bloody footprints belongs to Sollecito threatens their defense by placing him at the murder scene. Knox, 22, a Seattle student who was studying in Perugia, is accused, along with Sollecito, 25, of murdering Kercher, with whom she shared a cottage in this picturesque Italian hilltown. Kercher, 21, was found semi-naked with her throat slashed on Nov. 2, 2007.A third person, Rudy Guede, 22, was convicted in October 2008 and sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the murder. Exploring LA's neon past

Image
Thanks to a community of neon artists and a museum dedicated to the preservation of the art, an electric glow still illuminates many vintage landmarks on Los Angeles' urban landscape."If Paris is the City of Lights, LA is the City ofNeon," wrote American historian Kevin Starr in the Los Angeles Times in 1999. Indeed, while neon enthusiasts might expect to gettheir fluorescent fix in New York or Las Vegas, neither city rivals Los Angeleswith respect to historic signage -- most six neon signs in the Big Apple, onlymeant to be temporary advertisements, were gone by the 1970s, while in Sin Citymost of the surviving historic neonsigns have been transplanted to the Neon Museum's downtown galleries and are nolonger on display in their original locations on the Strip. But thanks to aforward-thinking community of neon artists and a museum dedicated to thepreservation of historic neon signs, an electric glow still illuminatescountless vintage landmarks in Los Angeles' urb...
