A Double Standard Fueled by Desperation
Roseanne Barrs recent comments about Valerie Jarrett were vile, vulgar, and inappropriate. Ms. Barr can try to blame the medication that she was allegedly taking, but this does not excuse her conduct. As a grown woman, she must own-up to what she said and deal with the consequences resulting from her disgusting and inappropriate comments. In this case, the consequences were swift and severe, as ABC decided to cancel her show despite its stellar ratings and unbelievable popularity.ABCs decision to cancel the show has angered many Conservatives, who claim that a double standard exists in the entertainment industry against Republicans and/or those who support President Trump. The right-leaning critics took particular aim at ESPNs decision to hire Keith Olbermann and MSNBCs continued employment of Joy Reid. Both have made provocative comments in the past.ABC canceled Barrs show after she wrote a tweet that referred to former Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett as a product of the The Planet of the Apes and the Muslim Brotherhood.Olbermann was recently hired by ESPN for the sixth time, signing a new deal earlier this month with the Disney-owned network, which also owns ABC. Some conservatives on Twitter quickly pointed to Olbermann calling President Trump a Nazi on multiple occasions on social media.Reid, the host of AM Joy on MSNBC, has been at the center of her own controversy after several tweets were unearthed last month that included homophobic comments made on a decade-old blog if the comments by Mr. Olbermenn and Ms. Reid were not bad enough, Samantha Bee recently launched a vile and reprehensible personal attack on Ivanka Trump:You know, Ivanka, thats a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dads immigration practices, you feckless c -!And then, to pile on even more vulgarity, Bee said, addressing Ivanka: He (the president) listens to you! Put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to f stop she was not fired nor was her show canceled. Rather, the next day, the Television Academy awarded her for producing programming that advanced social change. She even garnered support from one of the lefts most elegant mouthpieces, Kathy Griffin, who said:Please do not be hard on @iamsambee for apologizing. While I was hoping she wouldnt, I know first hand what its like being put through the Trump wood chipper. .what shes going through right now is crazy. All for a bleeped word. Comics held to higher standards than the president, Griffin wrote.Shortly after Bee apologized, TBS issued a statement of its own and Griffin also chimed in. Spineless. Support your talent TBS. Instead, you made her apologize, she on these examples (and many others), it appears that Republicans have grounds for concern. It does not matter whether ABC had the legal right to cancel Ms. Barrs show. The lawyers can fight that out in court. What is more important is why ABC took such drastic measures against Ms. Barr when people like Mr. Olbermann, Ms. Reid, and Ms. Bee did not suffer the same fate? In other words, why the double standard? To answer these questions, one must look at the bigger picture. For the past several years, some Democrats, the mainstream media, and many in the entertainment industry have been obsessed with bringing down President Trump. Towards this end, they have allegedly implemented and/or engaged in many questionable tactics including, but not limited to, reporting fake news, bias reporting, possibly inserting spies into the Trump campaign (i.e. Spygate), obtaining a FISA warrant by way of a questionable dossier funded by certain members of their party, etc. In addition, they have resorted to personal attacks against those who support President Trump. For example, they have attacked and/or vilified Michael Cohen (President Trumps personal attorney), a bar-patron wearing a Make America Great Again cap, and/or a student who openly supported President Trump at school. sacbee. com/news/nation-world/national/article211769674.html) Therefore, the use of the double standard should come as no surprise, as it is another desperate far left tactic, the goal of which is to further vilify Republicans and President Trump in the eyes of the American public.Yet, despite their obvious obsession with vilifying Republicans and bringing down President Trump, they have been woefully unsuccessful. They have been unable to slow down President Trumps momentum and have failed to implicate him in any wrongdoing. The seemingly impenetrable Russian collusion plot has started to disintegrate and implode in front of their very eyes. The economy is strong, jobs are plentiful, and the potentially damning results of the IG report are pending. Despite all these things, let me make something very clear. Conservatives have absolutely nothing to cheer about when it comes to the substance of Roseanne Barrs comments. After all, it was not that long ago that Republicans sharply criticized Michelle Wolf for her disgusting and derogatory comments about White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Clearly, Republicans cannot simultaneously attack Ms. Wolf and support Ms. Barr.Roseanne Barrs comments were despicable, loathsome, and un-American. Moreover, ABCs decision to cancel her show was not necessarily the wrong one. What is troubling, however, is the clear double standard that is being utilized by those who want to see President Trump fail. Fortunately, most people see this for what it really is, which is another woeful and desperate tactic/attempt by some on the left to stay relevant as we approach the midterms and, ultimately, the 2020 elections.Mr. Hakim is an attorney and a political commentator and writer.
